Basketball

Our basketball program provides an inclusive, supportive space for children, teens, and adults with disabilities to enjoy the game of basketball. By adjusting basic rules and tailoring activities to fit varying skill levels, we ensure that every player can participate, learn, and thrive in a safe, enjoyable environment.

The Playmakers Basketball Program is about more than just basketball—it’s an opportunity for players to build confidence, improve coordination, and form lasting friendships. We encourage parents to cheer on all players and share in the excitement of each game. Here’s what parents, families, and athletes can expect:

Safety

The safety and well-being of our athletes are our top priorities.

To prevent injuries, all players must remove jewelry (rings, earrings, necklaces) and wear athletic shoes on the court. Each practice begins with a guided warm-up and stretching session, where coaches provide individualized support to help players establish good form.

Regular water breaks are included to keep everyone hydrated and energized throughout the session.

Skill Evaluation & Team Division

At the start of the season, we assess each athlete’s skills in passing, dribbling, and shooting. Based on these evaluations, players are divided into groups by age and skill level to ensure that everyone receives the appropriate level of coaching and support for their abilities.

Tailored Practices

Practices are structured to build foundational basketball skills while promoting teamwork and sportsmanship.

For younger players, we use a 6-foot basketball hoop to make reaching the basket easier. Key skills like passing, dribbling, and basic basketball strategies are emphasized, with teamwork being a major focus. To encourage collaboration, players are required to make two passes before attempting a shot during practice.

Game Time

As the season progresses, both younger and older groups transition into half-court games, so they may apply the skills they've developed in a supportive, structured environment. These games allow players to experience real game scenarios while reinforcing teamwork, sportsmanship, and confidence on the court.

Each practice session lasts 60 minutes, balancing time for skill-building, teamwork exercises, and gameplay. This structure provides athletes with a well-rounded experience that fosters both individual growth and a sense of camaraderie with teammates.
